The European Capital of Culture is a city chosen by the European Union for a period of one year during which it is given the opportunity to highlight the importance of culture in the life of a city, to involve citizens and creators in this process and to promote European culture.
The institution aims to strengthen the long-term cultural and economic development of a city. Much like the Olympics, it is the most important annual cultural event of Europe and a great tribute for any city and country.
THE PAFOS 2017 PROGRAMME
The Pafos2017 artistic programme has been developed based on traditions spanning thousands of years when culture was enacted out in the open air and on the acknowledgement that there is a necessity for a new openness in our way of thinking, living and acting so that we may re-connect spaces and people in our region.
Pafos’ rich cultural heritage and the energy of the city and its citizens, are the main resources of the Open Air Factory.
The active involvement of local and national cultural carriers, the engagement and participation of artists from all over the world and a legacy of sustainable cultural collaboration is the ultimate goal of the Pafos2017 ECoC.
