June 5th … is not just another single day … June 5th is an Annual Event with a history of 42 years.
June 5th 2016 is the 42nd Celebration of World Environment Day (WED) on which day events worldwide are held to encourage awareness and action for the protection of our environment.
WED is the United Nations’ most important day, began in 1974 and has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.
WED serves as the “people’s day” for doing something to take care of the Earth or be an agent of change. That “something” can be focused locally, nationally or globally; it can be an individual or group action involving a team.
Each year’s WED has a different theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. WED 2016’s theme is the illegal trade in wildlife under the slogan “Go Wild for Life”, which threatens species such as rhinos and tigers with extinction. Wildlife crime also undermines economies and security, especially in developing countries.
Every WED has a different global host country, where the official celebrations take place. WED highlights the environmental challenges facing that country, and supports the effort to address them. This year’s host is Angola, a country seeking to restore its elephant herds, conserve Africa’s biodiversity-rich wildlife, and safeguard the environment as it continues to rebuild after more than a quarter-century of civil war.

How our Team celebrates WED 2016 at Elias Beach Hotel …
As a symbolic action in our hotel, we have decided to support this movement, by bringing AWARENESS and EDUCATING children, and at the same time spread the word around how WE CARE for the ENVIRONMENT, through an interactive activity organized at our Kids Club; the Little Monster’s.
We have started from the morning by drawing different type of animals, such as elephants, turtles in order to educate children with all different types of wildlife.
As part of our sustainability efforts is to Reduce – Reuse – Recycle, we have then decided to create a big banner by re-using and re-cycling a bed sheet. We started from the morning hours collecting from the beach various materials which we could then use for our creation, such as stones, sand, leaves and shells.
We then moved to the Kids Club where we started drawing and colouring the big banner, consisting of various environmental slogan, animals, trees, sea and shore ,all through the eyes of children.
By the afternoon, we finished our banner and went all together outside to the gardens and the beach area to show our creation to the rest of the world, where all the children together have shouted the WED 2016 theme: “Go Wild for Life”.
